Maasai Mara Wetland Treatment Systems
We visited seven safari lodges along the Mara River, assessing their current wastewater treatment provision and providing water efficiency advice.
Following the field investigations and discussions with stakeholders, we designed wetland treatment systems for each of the seven lodges which will allow them to use the natural processes of wetlands to treat their wastewater before discharging safely to the environment and local river courses. In addition to providing water quality improvements and water saving for the lodge operators, the systems will provide natural habitat within the grounds of the lodges. The construction of the systems is being implemented locally.
We also produced some best practice guidelines for optimal operation of wetland treatment systems in tropical conditions and water efficiency advice for operators of lodges in remote areas to help maximise their green credentials as ecotourism destinations
