Annual Conference 2023

Constructed Wetland Association Annual Conference

“Constructed Wetlands for Nutrient Control”

4th and 5th October 2023, Cranfield University, UK

There is an unprecedented level of concern about the risk to aquatic habitats from nutrient released into our waterways by human activity.  Many policy makers hope to use nature-based solutions, in particular Constructed Wetlands, to mitigate these risks.

Cranfield University is pleased to host the annual conference of the Constructed Wetland Association where we will discuss experiences, the latest innovations and experts’ views on the opportunities and challenges of nutrient control using wetlands in river catchments and delivering nature-based solutions for the benefit of people and the environment.

Guest speaker: Dr Carlos Arias of Aarhus University who will share his experiences of treating river water using constructed wetlands and developing innovative reactive media for phosphorus capture and recovery.

Expert speakers: The following speakers have been confirmed:

Catherine Wilson, Atkins; Renuka Gunasekara, Arcadis; Stewart Moir, Moir Environmental; Andy Freeman, ARM Ltd; Dave Johnson, The Rivers Trust; Steven Spall, Severn Trent Water; Russell Spencer, Binnies, Caolan Harrington, VESI.  There will also be poster presentations from academics and inductry professionals.

Wetland visit: we will have a detailed tour and demonstration of Cranfield University’s bespoke pilot scale wetlands, that are currently supporting research projects on greenhouse gas emissions, intensified wetlands, and surface flow systems’ impact on antimicrobial resistance.

Panel Discussion: A CWA first! We will have invited speakers to discuss “Nutrient neutrality challenges and opportunities”

CWA Accreditation Panel: Have you been meaning to apply for accreditation?  CWA experts will guide you through the process to give you a head-start.

Evening social event:  We will be having dinner in a local country pub of great repute...

Who should attend?

A major strength of the Constructed Wetland Association and our events is the diverse experiences of the people involved. We would love you to contribute to this, especially if you haven’t been to one of our events before.

We expect wetland designers, wetland builders, wetland academics and students, regulators, environmental charities, water companies and local authority employees all to find this conference a valuable opportunity to talk to each other and learn together.  We are a not-for-profit organisation and try to keep all our events affordable for all.  A discount for CWA members is available.
